Hairgrow Minoxidil 5% Spray: The 2–4 Month Wait Before You Judge It

Hairgrow's label asks for 1 ml twice a day, used steadily for 2–4 months before you judge it. One 50 ml bottle lasts 25 days, so that window means buying 3 to 5 bottles.

The Hairgrow label calls for 1 ml, about 6 sprays, on a dry scalp twice a day, massaged in with the fingertips.

Hairgrow is a 5% minoxidil spray used twice a day.

Its label asks for 1 ml per dose and 2–4 months of steady use before you judge it. Minoxidil, the drug inside Hairgrow, has U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval behind it.

Hairgrow is 5% minoxidil, a drug that lengthens the hair’s growth phase

Hairgrow Minoxidil 5% Hair Thickening Spray comes in a 50 ml bottle, sold through Care Outlet.

Here’s how the drug works. ISHRS, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, says minoxidil lengthens and extends the anagen, or growth, phase of the hair cycle. ISHRS adds a catch: minoxidil only works once the body converts it into minoxidil sulfate. That is one reason results differ from person to person.

The evidence for the drug is solid. ISHRS says the FDA approved minoxidil in 1988 as the first drug proven to promote hair regrowth, for men and women, and calls it “very effective.”

Label directions: 1 ml twice a day, so one 50 ml bottle lasts 25 days

The Hairgrow label says to:

  1. Apply twice a day to a dry scalp.
  2. Spray 1 ml, about 6 sprays, onto the affected areas each time.
  3. Massage it in gently with your fingertips, then wash your hands.
  4. Use it consistently for 2–4 months to see visible results.

The label’s warnings say it is for external use only. Keep it away from your eyes and off irritated skin. Do not put it on a damaged or infected scalp, and stop if severe irritation occurs. It is flammable, so keep it away from heat and flame.

The supply maths: 50 ml ÷ 2 ml a day = 25 days per bottle. The label’s 2–4 month window is 60–120 days, so it takes 60 ÷ 25 = 2.4 to 120 ÷ 25 = 4.8 bottles. In whole bottles, that means buying 3 to 5.

On side effects, ISHRS says the most common are scalp irritation, redness and dryness. It blames propylene glycol in the liquid and says the foam, which has none, is better accepted. On the same retailer page, 8 of the 10 ratings (average 4.9 stars) include written reviews, all in Arabic. Three anonymous reviewers say it does not leave hair greasy: “ما دهن لي شعري” (“it didn’t grease my hair”), “كأني مو حاط شيء” (“like having nothing on”) and “وما يدهن الشعر” (“and it doesn’t grease the hair”).

Three, including Anwar and Said Elhanafy, say it caused no dandruff. Those two also say it caused no itching. Ten reviews is a small sample. If you notice extra shedding after starting, here is why minoxidil shedding happens and how long it lasts.

Thyroid problems, diabetes and lupus can cause hair loss: rule them out first

MedlinePlus lists thyroid problems, diabetes and lupus among the diseases that can cause hair loss. It also says treatment depends on the cause. So the first question is why your hair is thinning, not which bottle to buy.

The AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) says the same for women. Other causes of hair loss can look like female pattern hair loss (FPHL), the gradual thinning over the top of the head, so those causes need to be ruled out first.

The AAD’s hair loss treatment page notes that you can buy many at-home treatments, minoxidil included, without a prescription.

ISHRS lists 2% as the women’s strength; 5% once a day may work better

Care Outlet lists only the 5% 50 ml spray. ISHRS says 5% is the strength recommended for men and 2% for women, to lower the chance of unwanted facial hair. It also says women may get better results using 5% once a day. That differs from the Hairgrow label’s twice a day, so agree the schedule with a doctor before starting.

The label adds: consult a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The AAD says dermatologists may use more than one hair-loss treatment for women. For how minoxidil compares with the other main medicine, see minoxidil or finasteride for women’s hair loss.

Hairgrow costs SAR 0.36 per ml against Regaine’s SAR 1.42

All prices were captured in October 2026. SAR is the Saudi riyal. SAR and US dollar prices are not converted, so compare within each currency. “Per 30 days” uses the Hairgrow label dose of 2 ml a day.

Product Listed price Per ml Per 30 days (60 ml) Source
Hairgrow 5% spray, 50 ml SAR 18.00 SAR 0.36 SAR 21.60 Care Outlet
Regaine 5%, 60 ml (same page) SAR 85.00 SAR 1.42 SAR 85.00 Care Outlet
KIRKLAND 5% minoxidil liquid for men, “6 Months Supply” (Amazon main price) $25.99 ($2.17 per fl oz) about $0.073 about $4.40 Amazon
Same KIRKLAND listing, cheapest of 14 other sellers $28.25, free shipping about $0.08 about $4.80 Amazon

The arithmetic:

  • Hairgrow: SAR 18.00 ÷ 50 ml = SAR 0.36 per ml; × 60 ml = SAR 21.60 per 30 days. For the 2–4 month window, 2.4–4.8 bottles × SAR 18.00 = SAR 43.20–86.40, or SAR 54–90 in whole bottles.
  • Regaine: SAR 85.00 ÷ 60 ml = SAR 1.42 per ml, so one bottle covers one month. Hairgrow’s per-ml price is about a quarter of that (0.36 ÷ 1.42 = 0.25).
  • Amazon: $25.99 ÷ $2.17 per fl oz = about 12 fl oz (about 355 ml), roughly 177 days at 2 ml a day. That fits the listing’s “6 Months Supply” title. Per ml: $2.17 ÷ 29.57 ml = $0.073.

Before-and-during checklist: 7 steps from the first check to the 4-month mark

  1. Name the cause before buying. Rule out the diseases MedlinePlus lists and the FPHL look-alikes the AAD warns about (see above).
  2. Check your scalp. The Hairgrow label rules out damaged, infected or irritated skin.
  3. Match the strength to you. For women, ISHRS lists 2%, or 5% once a day. If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a doctor first.
  4. Dose as written. 1 ml twice a day on a dry scalp, massaged in, then wash your hands.
  5. Handle it safely. Keep it out of your eyes and away from flame. Stop if severe irritation occurs.
  6. Buy for the whole window, not one bottle. Budget for the full 2–4 months before you start.
  7. Judge it when the label’s window ends, not before. The Hairgrow label says to use it consistently for 2–4 months for visible results.

Hairgrow’s catch is a 3–5 bottle wait; its edge is a quarter of Regaine’s price

The label asks for 2–4 months before visible results, so you buy 3 to 5 bottles before you can judge it. Women face a second catch: the label says twice a day, while ISHRS says women may do better on 5% once a day. But at SAR 0.36 per ml it costs about a quarter of the Regaine 5% on the same page.

Bottom line: if a doctor has ruled out other causes and your scalp is healthy, Hairgrow is a low-cost way to give minoxidil the label’s full 2–4 months.

Who should skip it, and what to do instead:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding: the label says to consult a doctor first.
  • Damaged or infected scalp: the label says not to apply it. Get your scalp checked first.
  • Hair coming out in sudden round patches: NIAMS (the US National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases) describes this as alopecia areata. That calls for a dermatologist, not a spray.
  • A liquid irritates your scalp: look at the foam form ISHRS describes in the side-effects paragraph above.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist before you start if:

  • your hair is falling out in patches
  • you have signs of one of the diseases MedlinePlus lists above
  • you are a woman choosing between 2% and 5%

See one during use if you have severe irritation (stop the spray first, as the label says). A dermatologist can look for the cause.
