Before You Buy Topical Minoxidil: Ask How Long You'll Keep Paying
Clinical studies summarized by the American Hair Loss Association show only about 40% of men get moderate regrowth from topical minoxidil. A 5% supply cost $4.71 to $12.16 a month at two Amazon listings in October 2026.

Topical minoxidil costs about 15 cents a day at the lowest other-seller offer on a Kirkland 6-month 5% listing on Amazon. That offer was $28.25 in October 2026.
The real cost is time. The American Hair Loss Association (AHLA) calls the ongoing commitment one of the drug’s main drawbacks, because the results last only while you keep using it.
Topical Minoxidil Is an Approved Drug Whose Exact Action Is Still Unknown
Rogaine’s maker calls its minoxidil products the first topical treatment for hair regrowth approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and says the exact mechanism is uncertain. Researchers think it works partly by enlarging hair follicles and reversing miniaturization, the process in which follicles shrink and grow thinner, shorter hairs.
About 4 in 10 Men See Moderate Regrowth; Women Tend to Do Better
Clinical studies show only about 40% of men get moderate regrowth from topical minoxidil, and the rest see little or no benefit, according to the AHLA. The figure is the association’s summary of clinical studies, not one named trial, so read it as a rough guide.
Women tend to respond better, the AHLA says, but the response varies widely from one person to the next. Neither figure tells you in advance which group you will land in.

Other Causes Can Look Like Pattern Loss, So Check the Cause First
Thinning that looks like pattern hair loss may have another cause. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says other causes of hair loss can look like female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and should be ruled out. Its page makes this point about women.
You are signing up for daily use and a monthly bill with no end date. So it pays to know what is behind the thinning before the first bottle.
$4.71 to $12.16 a Month at Two Amazon 5% Listings (October 2026)
Both listings sell the same 5% strength, so dividing price by months gives a fair monthly figure. Keeps sells its 5% solution as a 3-month supply of three 2 fl oz bottles. It is listed at $36.49, which works out to $6.08 per fluid ounce.
On a Kirkland 6-month 5% listing, other sellers offer it new from $28.25 with free shipping. The listing’s own price was $25.99, or $2.17 per fluid ounce. The table uses the higher $28.25 offer, so its Kirkland figures run on the safe side.
- Kirkland: $28.25 / 6 months = $4.71 a month (6-month listing).
- Keeps: $36.49 / 3 months = $12.16 a month (Keeps 3-month pack).
- Check: $36.49 / 6 fl oz = $6.08 per fl oz, matching Keeps’ own figure.
| Measure | Kirkland 6-month listing | Keeps 3-month pack |
|---|---|---|
| Price used, Oct 2026 | $28.25 (lowest other-seller offer) | $36.49 (listed price) |
| Price per fl oz, listed price | $2.17 (at $25.99) | $6.08 |
| Months per purchase | 6 | 3 |
| Cost per month | $4.71 | $12.16 |
| Cost per day | $0.15 | $0.40 |
| Cost per year | $56.50 | $145.96 |
| Cost over 10 years, at Oct 2026 prices | $565.00 | $1,459.60 |
Over a year, the Keeps pack costs $145.96 − $56.50 = $89.46 more. That is about 2.6 times as much.
Listing prices change, so check the price and the per-ounce figure on the day you buy. The per-ounce number is the fairest way to compare packs of different sizes.
Stop Using It and the Regrowth Fades, So the Bill Never Ends
Minoxidil does not address DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the hormone that shrinks follicles, the AHLA explains. So it works as a stopgap, not as a fix for the cause.
If you stop, the AHLA says, the regrown hair sheds, often within a few months. That is why the 10-year row in the table matters. At October 2026 prices on these two listings, $565.00 to $1,459.60 is the price of keeping whatever you gain.
For the medicines and herbs aimed at DHT itself, see blocking DHT: finasteride, herbal blockers and foods compared.
One Clinic Pairs It With Laser; Dermatologists May Combine Options
Minoxidil can be one part of a plan, not the whole plan. One hair clinic, NHLMA, says it often pairs topical minoxidil with laser therapy. That is one clinic’s practice, described on its own service page, not a trial result for the pair.
For FPHL, the AAD says dermatologists may use more than one hair-loss treatment, and minoxidil is one of the options it lists.
Verdict: Low Cost and Approved, but Only About 4 in 10 Men See Moderate Regrowth
- What it is, and for whom: a 5% solution sold without a prescription, for people with pattern thinning who are ready to use it for good.
- The flaw: only about 4 in 10 men get moderate regrowth, per the AHLA, so many pay for months and see little change. The fix: decide before you start how long you will give it. Rogaine says results may take at least 4 months, so a few weeks is too soon to judge. If you shed more early on, read new minoxidil users: is your hair fall the normal early shed?
- Strengths: Rogaine calls it the first FDA-approved topical for regrowth. Bosley notes that you can buy it over the counter. The Kirkland and Keeps listings above put it at $4.71 to $12.16 a month in October 2026.
- Who should skip it: Rogaine says its products are not intended for frontal baldness or a receding hairline. If that is your pattern, read finasteride 1 mg: 3–12 months to judge, any gains lost if you stop and talk to a dermatologist.

FAQ: Generic Bottles, Daily Use and Pills
Is generic minoxidil the same drug as Rogaine? Yes, in its active ingredient. Bosley explains that minoxidil is the generic name of the active ingredient in Rogaine, and the topical form is sold over the counter.
How often is it applied? Twice a day, according to the AHLA. That means a missed week is 14 missed doses. Bosley adds that formulas made for women may need only one daily use, so check the label.
Is there a pill version? Yes. Bosley says oral minoxidil comes with an off-label prescription, meaning a doctor prescribes it for a use it is not approved for. It is sold on its own or as a combination pill with spironolactone or finasteride. See before you start oral minoxidil: side effects to watch on the scale.
When to See a Dermatologist
See a dermatologist before you start if you are not sure what is causing the thinning. Book one too if your loss sits at the front or along the hairline, the pattern Rogaine says its products are not meant for.
Go back if months of daily use bring no change you can see. Results may take at least 4 months, Rogaine says, so do not count it a miss before then. A visit is also the right place to ask about combining minoxidil with other options, as the AAD describes for women.
