Your Best Hair Oil for Regrowth: Did Any List Measure It?

None of six popular 'best hair oil' lists ranks oils by measured regrowth; they rank by sales, star ratings or a writer's or expert's pick. The oil they name most, Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Hair Oil, costs $8.84 for 2 oz on Amazon (October 2026).

Amazon's top-selling hair oil, the 2 oz Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Hair Oil, ranks first on sales and cost $8.84 in October 2026.

Amazon, Walmart, InStyle, Byrdie, Ulta and Xyon each sort hair oils by something other than regrowth. They go by sales, star ratings, a writer’s repeat buys, an expert’s pick, hair type or oil type. The oil these pages name most often costs $8.84 for 2 oz on Amazon’s best-seller list (fetched October 2026). That works out to $4.42 an ounce. So an oil is cheap to try, but none of these pages shows that one regrows hair.

On this page, “best” means most named across 6 pages as of October 2026. It does not mean an oil shown to regrow hair.

  • Verdict: Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Hair Oil fits you if you want to try hair oiling on a small budget. It does not fit you if you need a result someone has measured.
  • The flaw: none of the six pages shows a measured regrowth result for it. Even the dermatologist who picks this oil on Byrdie calls its biotin a vitamin that “may help” regrowth, which is short of saying it does. The fix: if regrowth is your goal, look at topical minoxidil’s evidence and monthly cost before you rely on an oil. Topical minoxidil is a medicine you put on the scalp.
  • The strengths: it costs under $10 and ranks #1 on sales among Amazon’s hair treatment oils, with 123,354 ratings (fetched October 2026). It also puts rosemary, castor oil and biotin in one bottle.
  • Skip it if your hair is fine or thin and you want a light oil such as grapeseed, the kind Ulta’s hair-oil guide suggests for that hair. Buy instead: Amazon’s #7, Bask & Lather scalp oil, a mint and rosemary blend with grapeseed, at $9.99 for 2 fl oz (fetched October 2026).

Scalp Oils Come in Two Kinds: Essential and Carrier

Xyon’s explainer sorts scalp oils into two key types: essential oils and carrier oils. Essential oils, such as rosemary and mint, are strong plant extracts. Carrier oils, such as castor or coconut, are the base they are mixed into.

If you buy a pure essential oil, dilute it before it touches your scalp. Xyon says pure essential oils are generally not safe to apply to skin or hair undiluted, and carrier oils are one way to dilute them.

Rosemary-Mint and Castor Oils Recur Across the Lists

Two ingredients keep coming back. Amazon’s #1 best seller among hair oils is the 2 oz Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Hair Oil with Biotin, which also contains castor oil.

An InStyle writer has used 30+ oils and keeps rebuying three of them: the same Mielle oil, Sunny Isle Jamaican Castor Oil and Difeel Rosemary and Mint Hair Oil. On Byrdie, dermatologist Dr. Graf picks the Mielle oil because it combines rosemary oil with 30 other essential oils and nutrients.

Walmart’s best-rated page also leads with castor oil. Its first listing is Botanic Hearth castor oil, with 4.5 stars from 1,176 reviews. Bask & Lather scalp oil, listed next, shows 4.9 stars from 1,101 reviews.

Not every top spot fits that pattern. Amazon’s #2 is Moroccanoil, an argan oil product, and its #4 is a coconut oil.

None of 6 Best-Oil Pages Shows Measured Regrowth

Each page ranks or sorts its picks by a different measure. The table puts the six side by side, with the prices each one lists and the date it was read.

Source (date read) What its ranking rests on What it puts first Prices it lists Regrowth measured?
Amazon best sellers (fetched Oct 2026) Sales, “updated frequently” #1 Mielle Rosemary Mint, 2 oz; #2 Moroccanoil; #4 a coconut oil $8.84 (Mielle) None shown
Walmart best-rated (fetched Oct 2026) Customer ratings, 4 stars and up; a sponsored ad sits above the listings First listing: Botanic Hearth castor oil, 4.5 stars, 1,176 reviews; next, Bask & Lather scalp oil, 4.9 stars, 1,101 reviews $1,799.00 (sponsored Hairmax cap ad) None shown
InStyle (published 26 Jul 2026) One writer’s 3 repeat buys out of 30+ oils Mielle, Sunny Isle Jamaican Castor Oil, Difeel Rosemary and Mint Each under $10 None shown
Byrdie (updated 8 Jun 2026) Dermatologist Dr. Graf, trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) Kerry E. Yates, Byrdie’s own testing Best Overall: Color Wow; Dr. Graf’s pick: Mielle $46 (Color Wow); $23-$24 (The Ordinary serum) None shown
Ulta guide Hair type: fine or thin, frizzy Light oils for fine or thin hair — None shown
Xyon Oil type: essential versus carrier The two kinds of oil — None shown

On these pages, a top spot means most bought, rated 4 stars or more, picked by a writer or expert, or matched to a hair type. None of them shows hair counted before and after use. A top spot tells you an oil is popular. It does not tell you the oil works.

Two pages do report growth, but as impressions rather than counts. On Byrdie’s Best Overall pick, Color Wow, the team says it noticed new growth within a few months. The InStyle writer reports baby hairs along the hairline within weeks of using the Mielle oil nightly. Neither page counts hairs, so both stay “None shown” in the table.

The Repeat Picks Cost Under $10; Byrdie’s Best Overall Is $46

The repeat picks are cheap. InStyle’s three repeat buys each cost under $10 (page published 26 Jul 2026). Byrdie’s Best Overall, Color Wow Youth Juice Collagen Scalp Treatment, costs $46 at Amazon (updated 8 Jun 2026).

Byrdie also lists The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum at $24 at Sephora, $23 at Ulta and $24 at Target. Even at Ulta’s $23, the lowest of the three, the serum costs 2.6 times the Mielle oil.

The highest price we found on these pages is not an oil. Walmart’s best-rated hair growth oils page opens with a sponsored Hairmax PowerFlex 272 Laser Hair Growth Cap, labeled “FDA-Cleared Device”, at $1,799.00 (fetched October 2026). At Amazon’s $8.84, that price would buy 203 bottles of the Mielle oil.

Apply at Night, and Choose a Light Oil for Fine Hair

Byrdie gives a simple routine: put the oil on at night, leave it in while you sleep and wash your hair in the morning. For how much to use, follow the product’s label. Judge any oil over months, not weeks: Dr. Graf tells Byrdie that hair growth products typically take several months of consistent use to show results.

Next, match the oil to your hair. If your hair is fine or thin, Ulta’s guide suggests light oils such as grapeseed, which add shine without flattening it. The same guide also has picks for frizzy hair.

Before You Spend More, Compare Oils With Minoxidil and Finasteride

If you want a result someone has measured, check the evidence for medicines as well as oils. This site covers two medicines in depth: minoxidil and finasteride.

If you are thinking about finasteride, start with finasteride for thinning hair: approved dose, who it fits and limits. If a laser cap tempts you, read red light therapy for hair loss: evidence, wavelengths and timelines before you spend four figures.

Next step: see how oils, medicines and devices compare in the hair loss options compared on this site.

Next step: read more in Treatments compared on HairLossTreatment, or check the figures in Same Hair-Loss Pill, Different Price: Who Charges What.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does rosemary oil work as well as minoxidil? ScalpsUSA’s page on doctor-recommended oils calls rosemary “scientifically proven to be as effective as minoxidil”, but it names no study behind that line. None of the six pages above shows that comparison measured. On these pages, the evidence for the claim is weak.

Do the expert picks agree on one oil? No. Byrdie’s Best Overall is a Color Wow scalp treatment, but its dermatologist picks the Mielle oil. Walmart’s first listing is a castor oil, and the InStyle writer keeps rebuying three different oils.

When should you see a dermatologist? If your hair is thinning and you don’t know why, see one before you spend more on oils. ScalpsUSA lists genetics, stress, hormonal imbalances and medical conditions as causes of thinning hair. An oil can’t tell you which of these is behind yours.
